At the family farm.
We are a small family farm, operating in rural Bakersfield, California. We have been homesteading and gardening here for over 20 years, and each year we get better and better at providing the community with the freshest, nutrient dense, and outstandingly delicious produce.
Some of our favorites to grow are heirloom tomatoes. Mary Jean has been perfecting the art of growing trellised tomatoes for years. Every year our high tunnel is loaded with the best sun ripened heirlooms, packed with that old-fashioned flavor. Don't miss out, these beauties are only available in the Spring Summer CSA.
A customer favorite is our sun-ripened strawberries. Our Albion and Monterey berries are grown form organic California root stock. They are grown to sweet perfection and harvested daily during the Spring and early Summer. Appointments for You-pick are available to all of our CSA members.
Another specialty is our greens and lettuces. Packed with flavor, crisp clean texture and in a rainbow of colors, our greens outshine all others around. Our method of growing in protected high tunnels directly in the field results in clean, dense, nutritious and flavorful lettuce. Each variety we grow has been selected for flavor, color and the perfect presentation. All of our greens are harvested, washed, and packed in under an hour. This process insures a long lasting freshness not available in your local grocery stores. Our lettuces and blends will last weeks in the fridge.
How to support our little Farm
The best way to support our farm is through a seasonal CSA purchase. We currently offer three seasons of CSA: Winter, Spring and Fall. As the world changes so must we. Like everyone our prices have gone up as a result of the current situation. But we understand how important a healthy diet free of Glyphosates and other toxic chemicals. We are now offering a number of alternative payment arragengements as well as volunteer opportunties. All you need to do is reach out to Mary Jean at fortitudefarmcsa@gmail.com. If CSA is not a possibility for you, please follow us on Instagram @fortitudefarmCSA for monthly and weekly specials.
Our methods.
Our commitment to growing clean, healthy, nutrient rich food has deepened with each season. Our “no-till” approach, regenerative techniques, and organic practices increase the soil quality with every passing day. We love to geek-out on the farm creating mineral rich Bokashi and compost teas that are packed with biodiversity and living microorganisms. Look forward to farm fresh eggs, because chickens are a vital part of the nutrient cycle, creating some of the best natural fertilizer available. The SOIL is our greatest asset and its already hard at work for your family and ours.
We also tend the native pollinators and our avian friends by planting native flowers, herbs, shrubs and trees. These feed and create habitat for hundreds of species, many of which we rely on daily.
Never, not ever, do we use chemical insecticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.
